Dear Dr. Mantell,
As I prepare to move to North Carolina, I am thinking about the countless ways you have helped me; the very fact that I have been able to return to my career as a physician and a normal life, I owe to you. You truly gave me my life back.
Without your skill, I would probably be on disability, in mind-numbing pain daily. But beyond that, while so many doctors say they “care” and “understand”, it was always apparent that you did. You are far beyond being a special pain doctor; you are a truly special person – someone for whom medicine and the alleviation of pain and suffering is your calling and gift.
I am not being careless in my praise of you. It is hard to overstate how important a doctor like you can be until unrelenting pain enters your life. For others, should happen, and I hope it does not, if they find you, they will have found a rare gem.

Dear Dr. Mantell,
When you first became my advocate against my debilitating pain, I was leading a hermetic life. It was out of the question for me to participate in normal family life (children and grandchildren) or social events with friends. Pain was my constant companion and the sofa was my venue.
You guided and encouraged me with your medical expertise as well as your empathetic understanding of “the whole me”. Though it has taken some years, I have reached my ultimate goal: a 90 plus% pain-free life!
Just so that you can enjoy the benefit of your work, I would like you to know that within the past several years, I have danced at my son’s wedding, taken four trips to Europe, two to Disney (all the thrill rides) and at age 75, fulfilled a decades-long dream of the Galapagos Islands adventure trip.
There is no adequate “thank you”, Dr. Mantell, for returning me to a normal and active life!
Sincerely,
YG

Dear Dr. Mantell,
I have been feeling pretty well lately and I would like to thank you for getting me that way.
After having my surgery, as you know, I could not work. I was in and out of the hospital for uncontrollable pain seven times in one year and I really did not see how it was going to change.
As a result of your incredible care, I have now been able to take care of my business and make it thrive. I cannot remember the last time I was in the hospital, and I feel well most days.
What can I say to the doctor who has truly given me back my life? A million “thank yous” are not enough, but they come from the bottom of my heart.
Sincerely,
PG

Dear Dr. Mantell,
You are a miracle worker!
When I came to you in the spring, I could hardly walk a block. Three epidural injections later, this morning I walked twelve blocks.
I am so grateful for you help.
Sincerely,
EH

Dear Dr. Lewis Mantell,
I am enjoying a “good day” today, and would like to thank you for all your help. You’ve changed my life.
I have known many, many doctors in my life since the accident. I’ve had 30 operations, re-learned to walk and have made vast changes. Throughout it all, I never had a physician stick with me and help me the way you have.
You have made me realize that chronic pain is not who I am, it’s just what I live with. As corny as it sounds, you actually do treat the mind and body.
When friends of mine have not been aware of a specialty called “Pain Management”, I tell them that because of you my pain does not control my life anymore.
I am so fortunate that with your help I now know how to have “good days” and I treasure them. Saying “thank you” will never be enough, and words will never express the gratitude I feel for the quality of life you have given me.
